About us

A small roastery
built on patience.

We started in a back-alley garage with one drum roaster, a notebook of farm contacts, and a stubborn belief that coffee tastes better when no one is rushing.

Our story

From a garage to a counter on Division.

Scopeplaymingl began in 2019, founded by two friends who left coffee careers in Melbourne and Oslo to find a quieter way to roast. We rented a small space on the east side of Portland, cleaned the windows, and started inviting neighbors in.

Five years later, the room is mostly the same. The wood has darkened, the regulars are real, and the coffee is still roasted by the same two hands that started it.

What we believe

The four quiet rules.

Buy fairly

We pay above market for every bean we roast. The farms we work with are partners, not suppliers.

Roast small

Five-kilo batches, hand-cupped, hand-logged. Nothing leaves the roastery untasted.

Pour slowly

A pour-over takes four minutes. We don't shorten it. The wait is part of the cup.

Welcome warmly

The counter is for conversation, not transactions. Stay a while.
